College students near Yonkers use tech to help seniors

As participants in the #WestchesterSmart Mobile App Development Bowl, a team of Westchester Community College students worked together to create an app that allows family to keep in contact with the caregivers of elderly family members.

The app allows family members and caregivers to communicate which meals an elderly person ate, if the person had any pain, and any medicines given.

According to Laura Antonucci, a student in marketing at the school, which is near Yonkers, the goal was create an app that would aid with connecting people and with organizing information. She said:

"We conducted focus groups and wanted to come up with a way to have more interaction between families and caregivers.

"[The app includes] a family tree, so caregivers can remind seniors about family birthdays, recitals, anniversaries, and other important events like that.”

Technology competitions are fairly common, and schools that host them can use poster printing to spread the word and encourage talented students to participate. The #WestchesterSmart contest was created by Robert P. Astorino, the executive of Westchester County, and by the Seidenberg School of Computer Science and Information Systems at Pace University.

Teams participated in workshops held at Pace's campus in Pleasantville on March 3. On April 28, the teams will present them creations and apps during the contest itself, also held at Pace University.
