Abandoned movie theater to see new life

The old movie theater on Saw Mill River Road in Greenburgh, near Yonkers, is about to get a new lease on life.

The Greenburgh Town Board met earlier this month and held a special work session with developers William Null and Robert Baker to discuss a new vision for the currently vacant space.

The two developers plan on transforming the defunct cinema into a 69,000-square-foot supermarket. As part of the plan, the developers will build sidewalk connecting the new grocery store to a condominium complex on Old Country Road. The plan for the new supermarket calls for razing the movie theater and starting from scratch.

Along with a grocery store, there are also plans to build a restaurant on the property.

Companies that have plans to revive empty or abandoned properties can use banner printing to keep the public up-to-date about what is going on. The developers didn't reveal the name of the supermarket at the February meeting, as they are waiting until they get final approval before they do so.

At the meeting, the town supervisor recommended that the pair reconsider keeping the name of the market under wraps. He noted that it is important for the community to be able to dialogue with the supermarket company about the process.

After the developers file their application to redevelop the site, the town staff will review it before referring it to the Planning Board. After that, there will be a public hearing before the Town Board.
