Musician to play Dominican music at Forest Hills library

The Queens Public Library in Forest Hills will invite a talented musician to perform in May as part of a citywide festival.

Dominican Music with Berto Reyes and His Band is a program where audience members can listen to high-energy music performed by a prolific composer. The event is part of the Festival of New York's Citywide Dance Party and can be enjoyed by guests of all ages. Reyes and his group can play traditional music such as perico ripiao and merengue típico. The band also uses a variety of instruments, including the güira, accordion, and drums.

Reyes is a performer who was initially from the Cibao region of the Dominican Republic. At the age of 20, he formed a group with Santo Gil to play perico ripiao and recorded three 45rpm records. Reyes eventually left for New York in 1993 to take part in a tour organized by Ricardo Gutiérrez. He has produced 20 CDs filled with original songs, including El Palo Parao. Reyes now teaches accordion players and helps musicians build the instruments in Queens.

The performance will take place on Saturday, May 6 from 1:45 pm to 3:00 pm. Reservations are not required to view the show, and admission to Reyes' performance is free for all guests. The event will only be available as an in-person experience. Libraries that host musical activities like this may use Print shops to make Posters to advertise their upcoming shows to patrons.
