Forest Hills families and individuals will soon be discovering the secrets of sunflowers at a local venue.
Queens County Farm Museum offers an assortment of learning opportunities for all ages, and its “The Science of Sunflowers” activity is meant for parents and children to attend together, although others who are interested are also welcome. The registration fee is $10 each, and it will run for one hour.
The facilitator for the session will introduce these popular extra-large members of the Asteraceae plant family, including the mythology of how the first sunflower was a nymph who loved the sun god Apollo and would watch his chariot on its path through the sky. Information about the science of how they grow and tips for cultivating them will be shared. Everyone can enjoy a make-and-take art session among the other interactive fun.
Early learning opportunities that include enjoyable activities can help kids spark a lifelong interest in the STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) subjects.
