Forest Hills explores benefits of rain gardens

Rain gardens help to keep contaminants out of area waterways and also prevent flooding, and a Forest Hills area training event will teach how to look after these green spaces.

Queens Botanical Garden has teamed up with NYC DEP's Green Infrastructure team to provide an introduction to rain gardening, its benefits and how to keep these plantings healthy and happy. The sessions are offered once each season, and it will be hands-on learning.

The facilitators for the activity will teach the basics of home horticulture, as these are the skills needed to care for a rain garden. The goal is for the attendees to learn how they can become stewards of these spaces in their own neighborhood, and there is no fee to register. It is recommended for those age 18 and up, and the registrants are asked to meet at the Garden’s Entry Plaza located at the Main Street entrance.

Weather appropriate clothing is recommended, and the work will take place rain or shine.

Hands-on environmental stewardship can be rewarding, and benefit both individuals and communities alike. A poster printing company will be happy to help by preparing materials that may generate public interest in an upcoming event like this one.

Queens Botanical Garden will be providing this chance to learn more about rain gardens on December 18. Its web listing provides a link for interested parties to register.
