Local park celebrates Earth Day

Earth Day in Prospect Park is set to offer families in the area plenty of activities to celebrate the natural world. The event is hosted by the Prospect Park Alliance.

This is a free celebration and it will feature several natural activities. At the Audubon Center, there will be fishing lessons where participants can learn to tie a knot, attach bait, and have the opportunity to catch and release fish. The Blooming Naturalist activities will help visitors identify birds by using binoculars and field guides; they will also be able to create an official Blooming Naturalist button. Later on, they can help clean up the lakeshore and spread mulch in the park. The day will also feature a parade with instruments made from recycled materials, and a performance by Bash the Trash.

The Eastwood area of the park is set to have an adventure hike, family bird watching, ‘Nature on the Go’ (where visitors search under the soil for critters), and the chance to pick up a compost bin.

These activities will probably attract visitors from all over the city, including those from Forest Hills. To help advertise, organizers may invest in flyer printing services.

Earth Day in Prospect Park will be held on April 17 at the Audubon Center and Eastwood from 11:00 am to 4:00 pm. For more information, contact the Prospect Park Alliance at 718-965-8951.
