Library near Forest Hills set to begin renovation

The Richmond Hill branch of the Queens Library is over 100 years old, and officials believe that it is time that the branch, located near Forest Hills, got a facelift.

Plans are about to get underway for a renovation project with an estimated price tag of $7m. The project will include improvements both inside and outside of the structure.

Library officials who are planning a major renovation project can use Mailing services to let their patrons know of the plans, including when the library will close and when it is expected to reopen.

The Richmond Hill branch will close in January and the project is expected to take about two years. During that time, the nearly 175,000 people who visit the branch annually will need to find a new location to meet their needs.

Among the plans for the renovated building include making it more energy efficient, by improving windows and mechanical systems. The renovation will also fix problems that have been ongoing at the library location for years, including a decaying stairwell, a leaking roof, and plumbing concerns.

While plenty of new features will be added, including an elevator, the renovation's design will also feature some elements from the library's past. The library has a copy of an article from the 1920s that describes what the building looked like at that point in time. It will use the description to match certain finishes and pay homage to the building's history.
