The Queens Public Library will broadcast a two-part program to Forest Hills locals about Japanese dances.
Queens Rising: Japanese Culture Through Dance is a virtual program funded by Starr Grant where viewers can learn about Japan while watching professional performers. Sachiyo Ito, the presenter of the broadcast, will give people a history of Japanese performing arts and use demonstrations to showcase various theatre Forms. Audience members can watch the online performance on their phones or computers.
Ito is the artistic director of Sachiyo Ito and Company, which is a non-profit organization that was formed in 1981 to promote Japanese culture to the United States. Her company performs and teaches many styles of dance, including Jiuta-mai and Noh. The organization has also participated in events like the Japanese Festival at Missouri Botanical Garden. Ito has taught at New York University and is part of groups such as the Dance Historians Network and Just Dance. She even earned an award from the Foreign Ministry of Japan in 2008.
The program will be held on Wednesday, June 1 and Wednesday, June 8 from 11:00 am to noon. No admission fee or registration is needed to see Ito’s performance.
