Already underway, Forest Hills police officers and the Department of Transportation in conjunction with the Taxi and Limousine Commission is providing a “refresher course” for motorists under the guise of New York City’s Vision Zero plan.
Vision Zero is a program instituted to reduce New York’s traffic fatalities, and last year the speed limit in the city was reduced from 30 to 25 mph. According to Deputy Inspector Judith Harrison of the 112 Precinct, of which Forest Hills in included, the police would begin reminding drivers of the lower speed limit during an education phase of the operation.
As part of its initiative to reduce fatalities the department would also be utilizing electronic message boards. These will display reminders to wear seat belts and to not text, as well as the revised speed limit, and will be placed at the busiest intersections in Forest Hills.
The educational phase of the operation commenced on June 15 and will conclude on June 21. The next day, the police will begin their increased enforcement, which is scheduled to last a week. Keeping the driving public aware of the more often violated driving laws is a full time endeavor that often involves the services of a poster printing service.
Similar educational campaigns followed by beefed up enforcement have been conducted in other precincts. Forest Hills will receive additional officers for the duration its campaign.
