Forest Hills station platform to get extension

The Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) has good news for commuters who board trains at the Forest Hills station. The station platforms will soon be getting a bit longer, helping to ease congestion problems during rush hours.

The current length of the station's platforms only has room for the first four cars of a train. In some cases, LIRR trains can have as many as 12 cars. Limiting the number of cars that pull let people on and off the trains means it takes much longer for passengers to board and disembark. It also often leads to crowding in the four cars that pull up to the platform.

Transit systems can use brochure printing to explain any problems they are experiencing to their riders and to outline the plan to correct or improve those problems.

The platform extensions will add 200 feet, an addition of 50 percent. Once the project is complete, there will be room on the platform for six train cars.

Forest Hill isn't the only train station getting an extension. Nearby Kew Gardens station will also be getting longer platforms.

Each weekday, just under 2,000 passengers ride into or out of the Forest Hills station. There's been an increase in ridership in recent years, in part due to events at the Forest Hills Stadium.

The construction projects were scheduled to start right away, but there is no word yet as to when the platforms will be completed.
