Two elementary schools in Forest Hills do not have sufficient room for all of the kindergarten students living in their school zones, and may be sending them to schools in other neighborhoods as a result.
The problem arises from the rapid growth of neighborhoods zoned for P.S. 144 and P.S. 196, the latter of which is also one of the most highly regarded schools in the area. Dozens of students in these school zones have been placed on waiting lists and, until and unless spaces open up at those schools, the students will be attending other District 28 schools, perhaps not even in Forest Hills.
P.S 196 has a limit of 150 spaces for kindergarten and has 52 more children in its zone than it has seats. P.S. 144, meanwhile, has 64 kids more than its 100-student limit.
One of the most important considerations for families relocating is the quality of the school system in their perspective neighborhood. Naturally, these developments have left some parents concerned and unhappy that they may face a trek out of the area to school their children at an institute that was not their choice.
Brochure and flyer printing services are among the methods used to announce kindergarten registration. The limited space available in P.S. 144 and P.S. 196 highlights the need to respond quickly when such announcements are made.
