Flavor of Forest Hills neighborhood changes with restaurant closing

The Chalet Alpina, which for most of three decades has provided traditional German cuisine, recently closed its doors due to the retirement of its owners.

The eatery, a favorite with many in the area, closed with little to no fanfare. As Edge of the City first reported, a sign posted at its Metropolitan Ave. entrance read simply:

“We are now closed and starting our retirement. We would like to thank you for supporting us through the years.”

Forest Hills Chamber of Commerce President Leslie Brown lamented the closing of Chalet Alpina, saying it had been a meeting place for generations.

Known for its pork schnitzel, apple strudel, and large assortment of imported beers, the closing of Chalet Alpina leaves a hole in the neighborhood but paves the way for new establishments to try and become local institutions in their own right.

Changing neighborhoods offer new business opportunities. Newly established restaurants, retail shops, and other establishments require the services of Stationery printers, as well as advertisers and the services of other local companies. Business card printing orders make also be on the rise among restaurateur hopefuls.

For those who are not ready to embrace change, Silvana Chiappelloni’s Alberto Restaurant, which itself has been in business for almost 40 years, is still in operation next door to the now closed Chalet Alpina’s.
