Beloved Forest Hills chocolatiers ready to sell

Followers of Aigner Chocolates will have been saddened by a recent announcement on the establishment’s Facebook page – the Aigner family has decided to bow out of the chocolate making business.

On July 27, the Aigner Chocolates Facebook page explained that the family has opted to retire and are looking for a buyer so the business can continue. Located at the corner of 71st Road and Metropolitan Avenue, the store closed for remodeling earlier in the year and, as per its website, was anticipated to reopen in time to celebrate the location’s 85th anniversary.

Fans of the beloved sweet shop can only hope that the Aigner family are successful in finding such a buyer so that homemade almond clusters, marzipan truffles, peanut butter cups, and other sweet delights will still be available.

With his wife and son, John Aigner came to the U.S. in the 1950s. Working for a German chocolatier named Krause, who was the original owner of the family’s Forest Hills shop, John bought the establishment from Krause in 1960. John Aigner kept the shop’s original name, Krause’s Candy Kitchen, until 2009 when the name was finally changed to Aigner Chocolates.

Assuming someone buys the business, they may see the wisdom in following John Aigner’s example and have Stationery printers continue using the Aigner name on their Print products, at least for a while.
