The Silver State Art Festival in Carson City will feature more than 40 recognized artists, many of them who create with gourds.
In fact, the art festival is being presented for the seventh year by the Nevada Gourd Society. Groups that present shows such as this often use Print shops to create their promotional materials.
The extensive use of gourds has evolved for many years, becoming especially important to South American and African cultures while gaining in popularity as a North American hobby.
Gourds come in multiple shapes and sizes and, as three-dimensional objects, can be sanded, cut, painted, burnt, polished and adorned with other items and products. Known as “nature’s pottery,” gourds can be used in many ways. They can be created into bowls and baskets, bird houses, plant holders and musical instruments. Historically, gourds have been used in medicines, spiritual ceremonies and even as buoys to assist in swimming lessons.
Festival artists from Nevada and California will also exhibit paintings, photography, woodworking, jewelry and other works. In addition, art classes will be offered to those who want to actively participate in the event.
The Silver State Art Festival will be held September 5 to 7, 2025 at the Fuji Exhibit Hall in Carson City. There is no admission charge, but organizers will hold a raffle with proceeds to Visual Arts in Northern Nevada.
