An unusual event is coming up in Livingston that will appeal to gardeners, or anyone interested in environmental issues.
The Livingston Public Library is hosting its first ever Seed Library. A collection of seeds is now housed in the Reference department of the library, and anyone who is interested is invited to come and browse through the seeds, which comprise both vegetables and flowers. Many of the seeds are organic, heirloom, and native to the state.
People are encouraged to choose those they want, take them home, and plant them. Once the plants have matured and are bearing seeds, growers are further encouraged to harvest those seeds and return them to the library. They will be placed back in the collection so the cycle can keep going.
The seeds are free for anyone who wishes to take them. Further, it is not necessary to harvest and return the seeds, but the library would appreciate the assistance.
The Friends of the Livingston Public Library are sponsoring the Seed Library, and Great Swamp Greenhouses in Gillette, New Jersey, along with the Burpee Seed Company, have donated to the project. Burpee is a well-respected company that has been in business since 1876.
The Seed Library is scheduled to begin on Monday, February 12. When an event like this is planned, organizers will often use flyer printing to create informative handouts for those who take part.
