Lecture in Livingston discusses music legend
An upcoming lecture in Livingston will explore the life and legacy of the legendary vocalist Tony Bennett.
Sanford Josephson will present “Tony Bennett: The Ultimate Interpreter of the American Songbook,” at the Livingston Public Library.
Bennet was 96 when he passed away in 2023, leaving a legacy that includes a seven-decade career and 19 Grammy Awards. He first gained notice when he recorded “Because of You” in 1951. The song was Bennett’s first significant hit, climbing to the No. 1 spot on the Billboard chart, where it remained for ten weeks. His recording career includes 61 albums, with the latest, “Love for Sale,” a collaboration with Lady Gaga, appearing in 2021.
Josephson’s talk will describe highlights from Bennett’s career, such as how he came to create his signature song “I Left My Heart in San Francisco.” He will also discuss why Bennett remained strongly connected to jazz artists, how he inspired other performers, and was able to collaborate with much younger artists such as Amy Winehouse and Lady Gaga. The presentation will include video clips of Bennett performances.
Sanford Josephson has written several books about musicians include “Jeru’s Journey: The Life and Music of Gerry Mulligan,” and “Jazz Notes: Interviews Across the Generations.” Currently he is the editor of Jersey Jazz Magazine.
The talk is scheduled for December 4. People organizing events like this can turn to brochure printing to create informative programs for audiences who want to know more about the subject.
