Special event for Livingston seniors planned

A series of events for seniors is starting in Livingston.

The Livingston Public library announced the start of the Fall 2026 Senior Happening series, a concert featuring a string quartet from the New Jersey Symphony Orchestra. They will present “Musical Changemakers” featuring works by Black composers including Akua Dixon, Chevalier de Saint-Georges, and Jessie Montgomery.

Akua Dixonis is an educator, conductor, composer, and cellist who has been a leading proponent of string improvisation since 1973. She won the Downbeat Critics Poll, the first cellist to do so, has five Grammys, and has toured the world extensively with her group, Quartette Indigo.

Joseph Bologne, Chevalier de Saint-Georges was born in 1745 and composed a variety of sinfonia concertantes, string quartets, and numerous other works including an opéra comique. He is the first composer of classical music of African descent to win widespread praise in Western music.

Jessie Montgomery is a contemporary educator, violinist, and composer who was named “2025 Classical Woman of the Year” by Performance Today. She won a Grammy in 2024 for her work “Rounds.” and was composer-in-residence with the Chicago Symphony for three years. Her music references themes from the Black diaspora to social justice.

Those attending the Senior Happening series should bring a lunch to enjoy at noon, with the concert at 1.00 pm. Volunteers will supply coffee and dessert. This concert is September 18, and registration is required. Events like this can be more enjoyable when organizers use flyer printing to create a program.
