Sixth grader Andrew Du recently became the winner of the annual Geography Bee held at the Mt. Pleasant Middle School in Livingston.
According to Aaron Fike, the geography teacher of the school who was master of ceremonies for the quiz show, the Geography Bee is designed to encourage students to learn about the states and countries around the globe so that they become more aware of the world in which they live, and become more familiar with its many cultural and economic activities.
Students at the school prepared for the Bee by learning the capitals of the states and countries, the physical features in each country and continent, and the cultural and economic activities related to them. Fike added that this study is very intense, as it is carried out in a short period of time, but teachers provide strategies for the students on how to listen for clues in the questions and use their knowledge to answer the posers.
There were 19 rounds in this year’s contest, with Andrew, who has a love for knowledge and memory for detail, receiving two standing ovations from his peers after beating out seven other finalists. Second place finisher was Carolyn Meng, and the semi-finalist was Mark Belezeroff.
