Tenth graders from Golda Och Academy in West Orange recently Visited Mexico City with their exchange students from the Colegio Israelita de Mexico ORT (CIM-ORT).
Students from Livingston are among those who attend the Academy and likely participated in this program, which is in its second year.
During their trip, which lasted a week, they took classes in Mexican culture and government, visited the pyramids and the city center, explored popular Mexican art museums, and rode boats similar to gondolas in Xochimilco. They also visited the Otomi center, an indigenous community on the outskirts of the city, where the students learned how traditional handcrafted rugs are woven, discovered how to make tortillas, and developed an understanding of the community’s lifestyle.
One student on the trip commented that it was an opportunity to explore other cultures and get completely immersed in daily life. There was a chance to order food in restaurants and speaking to the families that hosted them in the Spanish language.
Christine Garrity, the Spanish teacher who coordinated the program, added that the week in Mexico City showed the students how much Spanish they had learned..
Poster printing companies may have been used once the students returned, helping them to create Posters with pictures and more detailed descriptions of their experiences, promoting the program for future years.
