Livingston residents who want to get a start on a healthy new year have a chance to literally take a hike.
FreeWalkers is organizing a hike of the South Mountain Reservation in Millburn, a short distance from Livingston. The hike is for everyone to enjoy, though parents should plan to accompany their children, and no strollers are allowed.
The total length of the hike is from six to seven miles, based on the trails taken and the weather. Participants are advised to wear sturdy hiking shoes, layer their clothing, and bring snacks and water. People will also find poles helpful, and should bring them if they can. There will be some on hand that can be borrowed.
The South Mountain Reservation is a nature preserving covering 2,112 acres and was home to members of the Lenape tribe of Native Americans. The area has changed little through the years, and is maintained mostly in its wild condition. Hardwood trees comprise extensive woodlands, and hemlocks overlook ponds, creeks, and streams. The Rahway River’s west branch flows through the area.
The meeting point for the hike is the Millburn Free Public Library at 200 Glen Avenue in Millburn, across from the train station.
The event takes place January 1 from 10:15 am until 1:30 pm. Although there is no charge to make the hike, donations are greatly appreciated. Organizers of events like this can help everyone enjoy the day by using flyer printing to create maps.
