The council and mayor of Livingston recently attended a presentation of the project idea of the T3CFAN (The Team That Couldn’t Find a Name) robotics team for the First Lego League Robotics Challenge for this year.
Each year, the challenge is themed on a scientific topic from the read world, and this year’s challenge is on hydro-dynamics. The four fifth graders and three sixth graders on the team are building, programming, and testing a robot created from Lego Mindstorms.
In their presentation, the students said their inspiration for their project was the level of devastation hurricanes cause and the resulting rise in prices of water. Their idea was to provide clean and timely water to areas that have been ravaged by hurricanes.
After meeting with the water and sewage departments in Livingston, as well as Roseland’s environmental center, they decided to build a drone to help deliver fresh water.
Their rationale for using drones was based on the ability of the drones to reach smaller areas, to provide fast relief, be environmental friendly, and use solar energy for recharging. In addition, the drones could be employed so that precious manpower can be used in other areas.
