Livingston robotics club takes part in annual competition

The 10th annual Livingston Robotics Club (LRC) FIRST LEGO League Junior Expo was recently held at the Livingston Memorial Oval. It was co-hosted by FIRST LEGO League (FLL) teams Flame Machinesthe and Thingamabot.

Attending the Expo were 50 teams from 22 towns in northern New Jersey. There were four members from the Livingston Robotics Club (LRC) and four teams from the LEGO WeDo classes from the Livingston Huaxia Chinese School.

FLL Jr. is expressly for children between the ages of six and ten, and is designed to encourage their interest in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) through the use of Lego robotics. Teams have adult coaches and students research a specific topic in science, guided by the Core Values of FIRST. They use Lego Education WeDo 2.0 robotics kit, and often poster printing and other types of printed materials are used to demonstrate what has been learned from such projects.

This year’s topic challenge was ‘Mission Moon’. This required the teams to research problems and solutions to what life would be like living on the moon, and to build a model of moon base using Lego bricks.

In addition to the presentations of the solutions to the challenge, the Expo took place in a carnival setting. There were many free enrichment activities, as well as demonstrations of robots from the FIRST Robotics Competition, the FIRST Tech Challenge, and the FIRST Lego League.
