Livingston resident honored by freeholders

Melvin Klein, a veteran of the United States Navy and resident of Livingston, was recently honored by the Essex County Board of Chosen Freeholders during the recent Veterans Celebration of the board.

Klein served in the United States Navy from May 1946 to August 1946 during the testing of atomic bomb at Bikini Island in the South Pacific. He was on the aircraft carrier USS Shangri-La and was one of the few people still alive that personally witnessed the testing of the atomic bomb, as stated by the freeholder news release.

During the ceremony, Klein shared some memories of his time serving on Bikini Island, describing the process of the atomic bomb testing. He still has visions of those days and he remarked about its implications for the future.

After Klein was discharged in 1946, he graduated from Slippery Rock Teachers College and became a math teacher. His career in education also included being a coach, athletic director, principal and for 22 years was superintendent of schools, the first six of which were served in Livingston. Klein spent 67 years in education and the New Jersey Council of Education named him Superintendent of the Year in 1965.
