Livingston holds annual day of making

The fourth annual Makers Day event was recently held at the Livingston Public Library. Special guests at the event were Imagine That!!!, the Livingston Lancers Robotics Club, and the Astronomical Society of the Morris Museum.

Makers Day is an event that takes place across the state of New Jersey, where schools, libraries, and other public places have the opportunity to celebrate a variety of Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) activities, and enable students to enjoy hands-on and fun experiences in manipulating items.

Students in grades three and above were involved in activities based on steering small remote-controlled robots. Others were able to see and touch a circuit board. One popular activity was creating catapults from popsicle sticks. The projectiles were small colorful objects which the children enjoyed watching.

There was also a table with special putty that conducts electricity, so that children could build circuits with wires. There was a button badge maker at another table to enable children to learn about the creation of enamel buttons, and so that they could make badges to remember the event. Graphic design may have played a role in the design of such special buttons.

Creativity Caravan offered a project for adults for the first time. A Cigar Box Diorama Workshop was held so that small objects, corks, fabrics, and other recycled materials could be used to create personal miniature worlds.
