A grant of $10,000 from Partners for Health Foundation is being used by residents of Livingston to improve the walkability of the town, and to run a community garden.
Richard K. Gorab, President and CEO of the Metro YMCA, commented that his organization appreciates the funding and is honored to be able to create a foundation so that people can have healthier lifestyles, regardless of their financial circumstances.
The West Orange Wellness Web (WOWW), which includes representatives from the school district, town government, Saint Barnabas Medical Center, and residents, awarded a New Jersey Healthy Communities Network to the West Essex YMCA, located in Livingston. According to its Executive Director, Helen Flores, this is part of an effort that will enable residents to walk safely from one end of town to the other, and to eat healthier.
Flores added that 18 families from the La Vida Deliciosa program of the YMCA, are already working at plots at the Edison Middle School’s community garden. The schools are able to have the remaining 6 of the 24 plots.
In response to comments from residents that roads are unsafe for biking and walking, WOWW is conducting an audit of the roads and paths in the town to find those that are walkable. The organization might then turn to a Print company to Print a colorful map of these paths that can be distributed to residents.
