The National Evolutionary Synthesis Center (NESCent) in Durham has funded research that may explain the interaction of plant life cycles when faced with changes of an environmental or genetic nature, and the study is set for publication next month.
While a lot of research has been done on each stage of a plant’s life cycle, delving into how each stage interacts with the others is a new approach. It was discovered that as environmental factors change the timing of one stage, the other stages adjust to compensate.
The results of this line of research is currently available online and will be available in the February edition of The American Naturalist.
In a simplified example, some plants will react to the early germination of seeds by lengthening the other stages of the plant’s life cycle in an attempt to finish its life cycle at its normal time. Researchers hope that if science can understand the mechanisms involved, it can find ways to assist plants in this endeavor and help them adjust to climatic changes that may take place.
