Local hospital receives senator visit

On December 4, United States Senator Thom Tillis paid a visit to Duke Children’s Health and Hospital in Durham.

Sen. Tillis took the opportunity of his visit to speak with Dr. Eugene Washington, President and Chief Executive Officer and Chancellor for Health Affairs of Duke University Health System, as well as Dr. Ann Reed, Department of Pediatrics Chair. During his time with them, he gathered information about the top-of-the-line research done at the facility and the scope of patients in North Carolina that Duke Children’s Hospital serves.

Dr. Dan Wechsler, Division of Hematology-Oncology Chief, led the senator and staff on a tour of the inpatient units of the pediatric oncology department. During the walkabout, they had the opportunity to speak with providers and meet patients to gather more information on the care provided at Duke.

This was the senator’s second tour of Duke’s cancer care facilities. In a statement to the media during his latest visit, Tillis said jaunts such as this one make him a better advocate for increasing research and care funding. U.S. Senator Richard Burr joined with Tillis to campaign for increased federal funding for research on how best to battling pediatric cancer, and for public-private partnerships.
