Bluebird bio bought a 125,000-square-foot manufacturing facility here in November 2017. The facility is largely complete; equipment qualification is in process.
Upon completion, Bluebird will have over $80m invested in creating a world class site containing several manufacturing suites able to produce lentiviral vector. The location will also include quality control testing and warehouse spaces.
Bluebird bio’s gene and cell therapies rely on the component lentiviral vector and the company anticipates that a clinical and commercial supply will be produced at its new facility. The location is big enough to accommodate considerable future expansion, such as space possibly for the manufacturing of commercial drugs.
Around 50 scientists, engineers, operations and manufacturing personnel work at the facility and Bluebird is on track to increase employment to approximately 80 workers during 2019.

Bluebird bio CEO Nick Leschly explained his company’s philosophy, saying:
