The opening of a new distribution center in Durham means packages from online retailer Amazon will be arriving more quickly in the Triangle.
This new facility is the last stop before moving on to delivery by an independent business partnering with Amazon. From the sorting center, packages travel the last few miles to their final destination in area homes and businesses.
Amazon’s tech may sort the packages for delivery, but it is independent businessman Jasper Lee who oversees their delivery. In less than a year, Lee has seen his business increase from a four-van operation to the 33 vans he uses today.
July 15 and 16 will be Prime Day 2019, which will put the Durham facility through its paces with an exponential increase in package volume. Temporarily, more vehicles will added to handle the flood of packages to be moved.

James Shively, Amazon’s manager of logistics, explained how the company’s investment in upgrades to its logistical system in its delivery stations, air network, and fulfillment centers has changed the way it delivers Prime items. Whereas before a two-day delivery was promised, this has now been slashed to one day.
According to Amazon, its new Durham facility has provided 385 permanent jobs here, paying in the $15 per hour range.
