A Tredegar Corporation subsidiary, Bright View Technologies, is retooling its Durham factory from manufacturing optical management products to making disposable face masks for healthcare worker protection from the coronavirus.
North Carolina has recently placed its first order from Bright View and the company is fielding many other inquiries from customers. To stay in compliance with the city’s order to stay in the home, Bright View, according to Bright View President Jennifer Aspell, is tailoring its production so that it can use independent contractors working from home.
Aspell explained the company is crowdsourcing to enlist at home workers to assemble shields. According to Director of Operations Mike Bobay:
“We’ve developed a process enabling independent contractors to pick up a kit of materials for the face shields, assemble the product at home, and return fully assembled face shields to Bright View’s Durham facility where the shields will undergo quality inspections.”
Hiring workers, regardless of their employment status, requires a large volume of paperwork and many businesses turn to printing services to keep them supplied with all the necessary Forms.
The use of curbside zones for pick-up and drop-off will minimize interaction between individuals, thereby protecting those independent contractors from exposure to the virus.
The company anticipates adding 25-30 independent contractors over a two-week period and will give preference to those individuals who the COVID-19 situation have impacted, especially those who have become unemployed as a result.
Bright View Technologies is located within the state’s Research Triangle Park area.
