Mattie Beason, a Durham restaurateur, recently announced that he has sold the cider house he opened in 2015 to Stem Ciders.
Stem Ciders, based in Denver, Colorado, plans to rename its new establishment – the Northern Spy. The name is taken from one of the preferred apple varieties Stem uses for cider making. The Northern Spy will be the company’s first cidery outside Colorado.
Often, when a company takes over a location to run a business similar to the previous one, they will choose to customize items such as promotional Pens to facilitate the branding of their new establishment.
Stem issued a press release announcing that the Northern Spy will open in April or May. The cider bar and restaurant features a new menu and an expanded selection of beers. About half of the location’s space will be dedicated to its bottle shop.
Beason acquired Black Twig’s location in 2007 and opened Six Plates, a wine bar. In 2015, he transformed the wine bar into Black Twig – a cider house.
The lesser known craft cider trend has followed in the wake of the craft beer revolution. The Black Twig offered a cider-centric menu, one of just a few in the area. Beason played an active part in promoting the craft cider movement by hosting an annual cider festival called Txotxfest.
