St. Paul hockey team to begin title defense

With a new name and new leadership, St. Paul’s Minnesota Frost women’s hockey team will be taking to the ice this winter looking to retain their title.

The Frost began play earlier this year as part of the upstart Professional Women’s Hockey League, playing under the name PWHL Minnesota, and won the inaugural championship in a 5-game series against Boston.

This year, the team will be wearing new uniforms and using the permanent name Minnesota Frost, but will be bringing back its championship core, including Taylor Heise, Grace Zumwinkle, and Kendall Coyne Schofield. They will be joined by new draft picks like Claire Thompson and Britta Curl.

Original general manager Natalie Darwitz will not be returning, with Melissa Caruso named the new general manager.

This season of the PWHL will feature an extended season of 30 games, running from November to May. The Minnesota Frost team will play six games against each of the other five teams in the league, with the top four making the playoffs. Upstart leagues like this often use grassroots marketing methods like physical Promotional Products and social media advertising to help attract new fans.

The Minnesota Frost’s 2024-25 season will kick off with a match against the New York Sirens at the Xcel Center in St. Paul on December 1. The Center will host all other home games this season.
