St. Paul university to stage musical

Bethel University will be bringing one of Broadway’s most famous shows to St. Paul this February with its production of West Side Story.

The play will use Bernstein and Sondheim’s original book and lyrics, which retell the story of Romeo and Juliet in the context of two warring gangs in New York City. The musical has been staged countless times as well as made into two film adaptations. Bethel University’s Drama department will be looking to put their own spin on the story while still presenting the songs theater fans know and love.

The production will feature double cast roles, with a “blue” cast starring Malachi Fox and Trinity Vang on Thursday and Saturday and a “gold” group featuring Greyson Johnson and Gracia Lumppio on Friday and Sunday. Both versions of the musical will be overseen by a creative team featuring director Glenn Morehouse Olson and choreographer Sandra Agustin.

The musical will be preceded on each night by a pre-show lecture 45 minutes before the curtain rises. Student and community musicals like this often draw on the support of volunteers and local businesses, such as Print shops for programs and second-hand stores for costuming and set dressing.

The Bethel University production of West Side Story will take the stage at Benson Great Hall from February 5 to 8, with the final show being a matinee.
