New project takes Eureka! judges fancy

Union Depot in St. Paul, which is the sister city to Minneapolis, last year underwent a renovation and restoration project costing $243m and is now home to a permanent, multimedia and interactive display of current travel conditions and historic information. What’s more, it even picked up a Eureka! Award this month.

Ernest Grumbles, a judge for the awards, explained:

“The main thing that intrigued me, overall, about the organization was their specific focus on placing art, and the experience of art in public settings.”

Northern.Lights.mn was selected by the Ramsey County Regional Railroad Authority to create this technological and visual experience at the nearly 100-year-old building, which has been idle for the past 41 years. The display includes a 16-by-22 foot video screen with images from the history of the station and five listening stations.

The video screen is three-dimensional and undulating, and was created by Jim Campbell from San Francisco. Daily Tous les jours, from Montreal, created the listening stations, which are also seating areas so people can find out about travel conditions and local weather, learn about the history of the station, and hear the experiences of other people with regard to travel or the station.

Flyer printing is an ideal way to provide visitors to Union Station more information about the exhibit and how they can participate in it, while also highlighting its award.
