The Upper Marlboro Historical Committee is inviting everyone here in Upper Marlboro to attend the Crain Monument Centennial Celebration coming in early October.
The aim of the event is to recreate a photograph taken of Historic 1922 Crain Highway Monument from back when the town first celebrated the new regional road linking Baltimore to Southern Maryland.
Before this time, the Robert Crain Highway was only a narrow dirt path. After the Maryland legislature approved the $1.25 million for renovations, the Robert Crain Highway opened October 27th, 1922.
The monument is located at the intersection of Old Crain Highway and Main Street. Attending the ceremonies will be Mayor Sarah Franklin and the town’s four commissioners along with dignitaries from the five original counties and Baltimore City.
Maintained and owned by the State Highway Administration, the monument is composed of irregularly sized and shaped stones saved from a bank that was located in town behind Trinity Church. The monument was refurbished in 2018. It was originally designed by a Baltimore Architect Howard Sill and named for farmer, lawyer, and foremost champion in getting state appropriation for building the road connection, Robert Crain.
Pictures taken at commemoration ceremonies such as this often get duplicated at nearby Print shops to be used in historical societies' annuals and other historical records.
The photo will be taken Saturday, October 1st at 11:00 am at the monument. Get a Free Quote for Print
