What's Happening in Upper Marlboro, MD…

Upper Marlboro experiences native American culture

The 17th Annual American Indian Festival will be taking place here in Upper Marlboro in mid-October.

Admission will be free, and guests will get to learn about American Indian culture, and enjoy traditional and contemporary dancing, music, folkways and crafts, and eat authentic American Indian food like buffalo, elk burgers, and frybread.

Merchandise such as authentic tomahawks, drums, shirts, and art and crafts will be available in the artisan market. Native American horse showmanship, spear throwing, archery, native technologies, and tools will be demonstrated. A genealogy exhibit will trace the history of Indian tribes. There will be a do-it-yourself arts and crafts area for everyone to try their hand at making traditional Indian items. Children may especially enjoy the pony rides and storytelling. Professional family portraits will also be available.

Families that have pictures taken at events like this often engage print shops to produce duplicates for relatives and friends.

This year's Arena Director will be MC Keith Colston. Dance etiquette includes respecting the arena, listening to the MC, and honoring the head dancers. With some dances – such as the Snake, Veteran's Songs, and Buffalo – people are asked to only join in if they are familiar with the dance routine.

The American Indian Festival 2025 will take place Saturday, October 18 from 11:00 am to 4:00 pm at Patuxent River Park, 16000 Croom Airport Road.
