The town’s name was changed to Upper Marlborough in 1744, although late in the 1800s it was changed again, to simply Marlboro. It's thought that the change was due to a postal worker who felt the “ugh” made the name too long to fit on the rubber Stamps the post office was using at that time. By 1893, the name was in common usage and the town has retained the shortened version of its original name, despite attempts as late as 1968 to have it changed back.
Many people enjoy exploring and learning about a community’s history, leading to the development of historical societies. Such organizations can benefit by working with brochure printers, who can create colorful, illustrated Booklets describing local attractions.
The county courthouse
One of the most important buildings and major attractions in town is the Prince George County Courthouse, which was built in 1721 when the town became the county seat. Since its construction, the building has undergone numerous changes. It was rebuilt between 1798 and 1801, and again in the 1880s.
In 1939, the building was expanded and rebuilt again, in the neo-Georgian style, a project that cost about $175,000. In 1947 and 1969, small additions were constructed, and finally, early in the 1990s, another courthouse was built behind the existing structure.
The new building was finished in 1991, and comprises the Marbury and Bourne wing, which offers 360,000 square feet of space at a cost of $80 million. The old courthouse was then renamed the Duvall Wing, and is now attached to the new structure via walkways. In 2003, a $25 million renovation of the old building was begun, but a fire in November 2004 destroyed much of the structure. Undaunted, renovations continued and the building reopened in 2009.
Histories of individual structures can be described when preservation agencies work with flyer printing companies, who can create single sheets of information for interested visitors to pick up at the site.
