For the ninth consecutive year, the public schools of Prince George’s County, which includes the county seat of Upper Marlboro, are carrying out their program of gathering 10,000 Backpacks so that students in need will be ready when classes being next month.
Each backpack contains a ruler, highlighters, Pens, and college-ruled notebook paper. The side of the backpack has a case for a cellphone. Poster printing can be used throughout the county to encourage participation in programs like this one by donating such school supplies and time to help stuff the backpacks.
This endeavor is being supported by the Support Education Foundation, which Educational Systems Federal Credit Union (ESFCU) of Bowie established as a non-profit organization to benefit residents of the community. Also participating in the program are staff from the public schools and volunteers from the community and other schools.
The vice president of community relations for ESFCU, Victoria Samuels, said that the purpose of the organization is to serve the education community. She added that this is one of the many activities the organization does for students. This drive to “Stuff-A-Bus” with school supplies is geared towards middle school students, who she feels are entering some very challenging years so the ESFCU wants to ensure they begin with a strong start.
