The 40th annual Bill Pickett Invitational Rodeo (BPIR), known as the "Greatest Show on Dirt," will be in Upper Marlboro once again towards the end of September.
The rodeo honors Black cowboys and cowgirls and their contributions to a Western Black and cowboy sub-culture that still remains strong. It has been named after an African American cowboy rodeo performer who invented the technique known as steer wrestling or bull dogging.
Attendees will be treated to cowboys showing their prowess in bareback and bronc riding, bull dogging, bull riding, and calf roping. Cowgirls will be participating in ladies’ breakaway roping (modified calf roping), steer undecorating, and barrel racing. Juniors (ages 8 to 12) will have a breakaway and a barrel racing event, while those under the age of seven will have their own barrel racing event.
BPIR swag is available online. Some items are T-Shirts, hoodies, long-sleeved shirts, blankets, caps, Journals, and belt buckles sporting the event's logo and graphic design.
Although Saturday afternoon tickets are sold out, Friday evening tickets are still available at the time of writing for $43 for adults and $33 for seniors and children.
The rodeo has a Bill Pickett Memorial Scholarship Fund that offers four scholarships and a Crown Royal Hats Off Grant.
The Bill Pickett Rodeo will take place Friday, September 20, from 7:30 pm to 10:30 pm at the Prince George's Equestrian Center and Show Place Arena, 14900 Pennsylvania Avenue.
