Springfield to repair major bridge

The Springfield Department of Public Works are looking to make repairs on the West Street Bridge that connects Ludlow and Springfield.

Local Print shops often assist in spreading the word about such bridge repairs throughout the community with mailers, Flyers, and Posters.

The bridge has been closed since last August and is about 80 to 90 years old. The city is working closely with the Massachusetts Department of Transportation (Mass DOT) to assess the bridge and determine what best can be done for the bridge as it has served the area for many years.

Engineers on working on various methods of both a short-term and long-term nature that can be used to stabilize the structure of the bridge. Director of the Springfield Department of Public Works, Chris Cignoli, said that one of the short-term fixes for part of the bridge that is buckling is to cut part of it off on each side and then cover it with a plate and bolt it down. He said such quick fixes are what they are hoping to do this spring.

Cignoli said that a comparable repair was done on another bridge in the state by Mass DOT and the city is waiting to see how durable the results of that repair were before undertaking this plan with the West Street Bridge.

The city is waiting to undertake final inspections of the bridge once the winter weather has subsided and plans to begin short-term repairs this spring.
