Historic church in Springfield to be restored

Significant stabilization work will be carried out at Old First Church in downtown Springfield. This work will ensure that the building will be protected for future generations to enjoy.

Flyer printing can be used to spread the news of such important preservation work throughout a city.

Funding for this work comes from a Community Preservation Act grant of $300,000 that was recently awarded as well as just over $2 million in funds from the American Rescue Plan Act from the United States Department of Treasury. Kronenburger & Sons Restoration from Middletown, Connecticut has been hired to stabilize the exterior of the building as well as the abatement of hazardous materials and some safety repairs to the interior.

Designer services will be provided by Gale Associates of Rockland, Massachusetts. This work will include repair and replacement of the roof; restoration and repointing of masonry; replacement of shutters which have deteriorated; repairs to the chimney; painting; and the replacement and repair of flashing, gutters, soffits, trim, and fascia.

Mayor Domenic Sarno said:

“Stabilization work is underway at our beloved, historic Old First Church which has held meaning for our Springfield community for over 200 years. . . This critical work going on this summer and into the fall will stabilize this structure which has been standing as a centerpiece of our Court Square for two centuries.”

All work on the project complies with the requirements of the Massachusetts Historical Commission and the Springfield Historic Commission.
