A new German Gerena School will be constructed in Springfield.
The school will be built on the property of what was once the Chestnut Junior High School in the North End neighborhood of Springfield. The property is at the corner of Prospect and Chestnut Streets.
The original Gerena School was originally constructed in 1974 and was on Birnie Avenue. General decay of the building and water penetration from an underground tunnel system caused the school to be closed. The previous building for the Chestnut Junior High School on Chestnut Street was built in 1901 and 1907 and was demolished in 2014. The site is currently vacant.
Such sites often benefit from banner printing so that residents can remain informed about such projects and their benefits for a community.
Vanessa Otero, Executive Director of New North Citizens Council (NNCC), said this investment in the North End of Springfield will provide economic mobility for its children and their families. She also thanked Mayor Domenic J. Sarno for their commitment and partnership in ensuring that all children will have access to the educational foundation which they need to thrive and be successful in life.
Dr. Sonia Dinnall, Superintendent of Springfield Public Schools, expressed her excitement about the generations of students that will attend this new school and discover their potential for the future.
