A skating program for kids in western Massachusetts is currently being run by the Springfield Police Department (SPD). It is being held at the Cyr Ice Skating Arena in Springfield as part of the Stephen O’Brien Memorial Learn-to-Skate Program.
The skating lessons will be held from 3:00 to 4:00 pm, with children being asked to arrive for their lessons by 2:30 pm on lesson days. Rental of skates, time on the ice, and the lessons themselves are at no cost to participating children. Children also need to be properly dressed for their lessons with gloves to keep their hands warm and a fitted hockey or bicycle helmet. Other information and details about such lessons are often provided with flyer printing, and then distributed throughout a region.
This is the 25th anniversary of the Stephen O’Brien Memorial Learn-to-Skate Program. Cheryl Clapprood, police commissioner, said that Officer O’Brien was dedicated to his job and gave back to the community by mentoring and coaching children in the city. Clapprood expressed excitement about bringing this program back to the arena after a one-year hiatus and being able to continue the legacy of the officer.
The program will run until Saturday, January 8. There will be a Learn-to-Skate Christmas Party after the session on Saturday, December 18 with a special visit from Santa Claus.
