The Springfield Science Museum was recently awarded a $200,000 grant for renovations for the bathroom, lighting, interior improvements, and carpeting. The grant came from the Commonwealth Cultural Facilities Fund in Massachusetts.
Governor Charlie Baker came to Springfield on June 9 to tour a few museums. He made the announcement shortly after his visit to Springfield, and announced a $9.3m fund for tourism projects.
The director of the Springfield Science Museum, David Stier, is thrilled to receive the grant money, which will go towards funding new programs at the 21 Edwards Street building.
Family Science Adventures, a daily science program, will run daily from July 9 to 31 from 11:00 am to 2:00 pm. It offers science demonstrations and hands-on activities for kids. It is free with museum admission, and is likely to continue into August.
The Springfield Science Museum is part of the Springfield Museums. It opened in 1899 and expanded in 1932 with an art deco addition. In 1970, it added a public observatory, and a main entrance and welcome center came in 2004. The museum has exhibits of natural science, anthropology, and physical science, as well as a planetarium, aquarium, and snack bar.
