Fresh Paint Springfield was recently held in the city wherein over 20,000 square feet of mural artworks was installed in the downtown area.
After all the murals were completed, a block party was held which was the last of four events for Fresh Paint Springfield. Residents were able to see the artwork with a tour of the downtown on a double-decker bus or walk around the area to enjoy the paintings. Paintings were done at State Street and the Interstate 91 underpass, 159 State Street, the Skyview Downtown and the Taylor Street parking garages, and the Union Station Concourse, among other locations.
Rosemary Tracy Woods, an executive director of one of the art galleries that participated in the event, commented that its goal was to bring people together. Many people, particularly those with an appreciation for art and graphic design, see the murals and appreciate their beauty and want to see the downtown painted in the many colors of the rainbow.
The Common Wealth Mural Collaborative is the producer of Fresh Paint Springfield. It is a nonprofit organization whose goal is to fill public places with more mural art through festivals and other events. Funding for the festival is provided by the Springfield Cultural Partnership which partners with the Collaborative to create a vibrant cultural destination in the city and throughout the area.
