The Massachusetts Convention Center Authority (MCCA), owner and operator of the MassMutual Center in Springfield, will be demolishing the Civic Center Garage and replacing it with a new one. This garage may have a skybridge that will connect it with the adjacent arena.
Announcements of such projects are often made known throughout a city with flyer printing.
The Convention Center Authority recently purchased the garage from the Springfield Parking Authority for $3.5 million. Executive Director of the MCCA, David Gibbons, said that the MCCA determined that this would be a strategic investment in the future of the downtown area of the city. He added that the MassMutual Center has great economic impact for the city and having a new garage next to the facility will enhance other recent major investments in the city. Those who attend events at the convention center and arena use this garage as the primary option for parking.
Domenic Sarno, mayor of Springfield, expressed his excitement on the part of the city about this project that has been made possible through the cooperation of the Springfield Parking Authority and the MCCA. He added his thanks to Governor Charlie Baker and Lieutenant Governor Karyn Polito for their support of the region and this particular redevelopment project.
The Convention Center Authority has yet to determine the cost and the timeline for the construction of the garage.
