The new Deputy Public Health Commissioner for the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) for the city of Springfield will be Dr. Aretha Townsend.

Dr. Townsend has a diverse and extensive background in public health. She previously served as a Public Health Sanitarian for the City of Hartford, Connecticut and as a project manager for a Vaccine Response Team for the United Way of Connecticut. Other work experience includes working for Caduceus Healthcare with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Dulles, Virginia, as well as serving as a Public Health Analyst Contractor and as a Program Manager for the Capacity Project in San Jose, Costa Rica.
Mayor Domenic J. Sarno said that he and Helen Caulton-Hariis, HHS Commissioner, are glad to have Dr. Townsend join the department. Noting that she is highly qualified and has an impressive résumé having worked at a variety of institutions, he added that her education, experience, and passion to help those in the community will enable her to serve local residents and businesses with distinction.
Dr. Townsend thanked the mayor and the commissioner for their confidence in her abilities. She expressed her excitement about working with the commissioner, the team at the department, and everyone in the community to achieve the goals of the Springfield Department of Health and Human Services.
