New comfort dog to lend hand at local college

A new comfort dog has arrived at Springfield College, which will enable the establishment to provide better mental health resources for students on campus.

The dog is an Australian Labradoodle who is eight weeks old and is named Rookie. The dog was given to the Police Department at Springfield College in collaboration with MiraVista, which provides mental health and behavioral services to communities across Western Massachusetts. Printing services on college campuses are often used to provide more information about such animals and the services they provide.

Chief of creative strategy and development for MiraVista, Kimberly Lee, said that there has been an increase in the need for mental health services and support on college campuses, and this has outpaced the number of students on campus. Lee commented that addressing the mental health issues of students is important so that they can succeed both academically and socially.

Jack Vanas, a lieutenant with the Springfield College Police Department, added that this semester there have been many calls related to mental health issues and having a comfort dog would have been beneficial to the officers dealing with the students and the situations.

Rookie is available immediately and will be working weekdays along with his officers. Those who need mental health services at the college and the championship of Rookie can contact the campus police departments.
