Informational session for veterans on new benefits to be held in Springfield

Springfield Technical Community College (STCC) will be hosting Veteran Town Hall Meeting with the Massachusetts Executive Office of Veterans Services (EOVS) next week.

The state legislature passed the HERO Act (An Act Honoring, Empowering, and Recognizing our Servicemembers and Veterans) and was signed into law by Governor Maura Healey this past summer. This act modernizes services, increases benefits, and promotes inclusivity for veterans.

Once the state adopted the HERO Act, City Councilor Kateri Walsh and Mayor Domenic J. Sarno sponsored an option in the city to expand the possible exemptions and relief available for veterans in our community. The proposal in Springfield would provide tax exemptions on motor vehicles and double the tax exemptions on property for eligible veterans.

Mayor Sarno commended Governor Healy, Lt. Governor Kim Driscoll, and the state delegation for their dedication to the veterans in the state by signing into law the HERO Act. He said this will provide greater flexibility for veterans with their taxes. He added that these informational sessions are important as they outline the benefits veterans will gain through such legislation. Brochure printing can also be used to provide more details on such benefits.

An hour of HERO Act presentations followed by questions and answers will be held at the college beginning at 1:00 pm next Wednesday, December 11.
