The demolition and reconstruction of the Civic Center garage in Springfield is now underway.
Preparation work has begun with barricades and changes in traffic patterns soon to come. Thereafter, the eastbound lane of Harrison Avenue will be closed with the westbound or left lane remaining opened. From Bruce Landon Way to Harrison Avenue, the right lane and parking lane of Dwight Street will close with just two lanes remaining opened. The lane going westbound on Bruse Landon Way will be closed with access from Main Street but no access from Dwight Street.
Local Print shops often assist in spreading the word about such improvements to a major structure to the community through the use of Flyers.
Tara Coughlin of the Massachusetts Convention Center Authority, owner of the garage, said that the Authority has been working with the city to make this project more than a garage. Coughlin added that there will be some type of charging for electric vehicles. In addition, the Authority is looking to make it look more than a typical concrete garage.
One change Coughlin said is not to have a skybridge between the MassMutual Center and the garage. The primary entrance to the garage will be on Harrison Street with a secondary entrance off Dwight Street. Coughlin said this will enable Dwight Street to be more friendly to pedestrians.
The project is expected to be completed for the 2023 hockey season.
